Nature House Events Week 6: August 3 - 7

Wednesday, August 3


9:00 am start: Wednesday Wander at North Cove Beach (meet at the end of North Cove Road) (all ages)

We are back at North Cove Beach for another mini wander! We will walk along the shore identifying birds, plants, and marine species. What we count will be recorded on eBird and iNaturalist. Come spend some time at the beach exploring nature.


2:00 - 4:00pm: Tea Time at the PAG!, Lot 62, North Cove Road (all ages)

We will explore the many incredible medicinal plants of the People’s Apothecary Garden and use some of them to create beautiful blends of tea!


Thursday, August 4


9:00 - 11:00 Harvest Hours at the PAG - Path widening!, Lot 62 North Cove Road (all ages)

Drop by the People’s Apothecary Garden anytime between 9:00 - 11:00 to take a wander, harvest some herbs, and learn about the PAG's 40 + medicinal plants. Today we will be continuing with our path widening project. If any volunteers want to come down and help us out with some digging, your time would be greatly appreciated!


2:00 - 4:00 pm: Seaquarium and Game Drop in at the Nature House (all ages)

Meet the new creatures in the Seaquarium, there are two new fish and lots of tunicates! We will play lots of outdoor nature games! We will also have watercolours available for anyone who wants to paint!


*Note: Cyanotyping with Carol Swann has been moved to next Thursday as full sun is needed for this craft!


7:00 pm start: Doc & Talk: Waste & Recycling at the Nature House (adult)

This week we will watch an hour long documentary called The Clean Bin Project which follows a Vancouver couple trying to produce no waste for a year, it also touches on the waste stream in Vancouver. This will be a great movie for discussion as the recycling discussions have been very interesting on Thetis. Come discuss how to lower your plastic waste and think of new ideas for waste management on Thetis!


Friday, August 5


2:00 pm start: Junior Biologist - Sealightful - at the Nature House (kids 8-12)

This week’s focus is sea life! - we will start with exploring the seaquarium and touch tank, and then we will go down to the ocean and explore the intertidal sea life! We will observe and learn about the seaweed, barnacles, oysters, sea stars and much more. We will finish the day with a sea life inspired craft, come on down for a fun day of ocean exploration and curiosity.


Saturday, August 6


10:00 am start: Map the Portal with Liam Irwin at the Nature House (all ages)

Drones, Lidar, and mapping are the focus of this workshop and will be utilized to make a virtual 3D model of the Portal! A demo drone flight will collect images from above and be compiled together to create a model of the area.


Liam will introduce the science of remote sensing and show example 3D models of Moore Hill and other Thetis Island sites, exposing their unique topography! Liam will discuss the use of these tools in ecology, forestry, and beyond. We will also have a kid’s mapping activity and treasure hunt!


Sunday, August 7


9:00 - 11:00 Harvest Hours at the PAG - Pruning, Lot 62 North Cove Road (all ages)

Drop by the People’s Apothecary Garden anytime between 9:00 - 11:00 to take a wander, harvest some herbs, and learn about the PAG's 40 + medicinal plants. Today we will be pruning our herb spiral garden as well as any of our other plants who need a good trimming! Everyone can take home the cuttings as well. We would love volunteers to come show us their pruning techniques and offer insight.


2:00 - 4:00 Family Nature Afternoons at the Nature House (all ages)

Cool off from the summer heat by swimming and snorkeling at the beach. We will swim along the shore observing crabs, sea stars, and other sea creatures. We will have a few ThINC members collecting items from deeper water to show more sea life off! There will be no lifeguard on duty, so parents are required to stay and help their kids in the water. The seaquarium will also be open for this visit. Bring sunscreen, floaties, towel, goggles, masks & snorkels for this fun filled day!
