Forage fish are small schooling fish that are eaten by other marine species such as salmon, birds and marine mammals. Pacific sand lance, surf smelt, anchovies and herring are all forage fish. Forage fish are a vital part of the marine food web. Our forage fish monitoring group collects samples from Thetis Island beaches as part of a larger citizen science project run by the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Research Institute at VIU Nanaimo. What are we looking for? Eggs! Contact us or check out the Forage Fish Monitoring Group page for more information or to find out how you can get involved.
